The Times Higher Education-QS World University Ranking (THESS), a university rating company, said that University of Indonesia (UI) ranked the 201st among 500 world's best universities, Kompas daily reported on Friday.

"This is an extra ordinary achievement. Last year, UI ranked the 287th and in 2007 ranked the 395th," the university's rectorDr. Gumilar Rusliwa Somantri was quoted as saying.

Based on the THESS survey on 5,000 universities worldwide, UI is now included in elite university lines in Asia (the 34th) and in the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nation) countries (the 5th).

The institution evaluation was based on performance indicators of research and publication, teaching, graduates' work performance and others.

Gumilar said that in line with UI's increasing rank, the amount of national and international research publications by the university's researchers had increased to 10,050 in 2009 compared to 9,050 in 2008. In the same period, the number of the university's researchers increased to 1,005 from 937.
